North Dakota

I've been thinking about North Dakota lately. It turns out I was lucky to take a trip up to the northwestern part of the state to take photos in the summer of 2009. Since then, that area has exploded with oil and gas drilling, as fracking has opened up access to the Bakken formation. The landscape that I saw, and photographed, is apparently quickly disappearing.

The photo above is an example of what I found in 2009. I don't know what the same spot would look like now.

Other entries from my North Dakota trip are here.

On the Railroad...

I've been having lots of fun with my infrared camera recently. I like this shot of a railroad crossing arm in the direct light of the setting sun. The location is south of Urbana, IL.

Infrared Yet Again

The crops in East Central Illinois are dying in the historic drought this year, and the heat is oppressive, and yet almost daily clouds scud by, as if to tease us. I took this infrared photo southeast of Urbana this week, in a field of soybeans that was struggling to survive.

These pictures are from a trip to Western Michigan in 1976, originally shot on negative film, and now scanned, adjusted, and rendered as paintings. Above is a bucolic scene on Mackinac Island, which allows no cars on the island. These beautiful homes are now multimillion dollar treasures.

Below is the harbor at Ludington, Michigan, at sunset. This is a pretty common view, but for me it brings back lots of memories.

Playing with Star Stax

I just started working with Star Stax (starstax.net), software designed to create star trails from multiple night sky photos. In doing so, I discovered it can also create great "cumulative" time lapse frames.  Above is an example of a cumulative shot combining both day and night shots. The bright, glaring line across the upper right is the full moon.

I also used it to re-create some of my night time lapse films to get the cumulative effects. These are my favorites so far:

Kyoto Scene

This is one of my favorite street scenes from Kyoto, Japan. The girls is taking a picture with her phone of Kyoto's massive modern train station, while her friends study a local map. November, 2006.
