Photo of the Day

Here is a view of tiny Chebanse, Illinois on a foggy day. I really like this shot, although I'm not sure why. Sometimes I never figure out why I like something; I just do.

Photo of the Day

I went to Las Vegas once with a friend, but the Strip didn't interest me much. So instead I headed out into the desert, which did interest me. Here's a view of the Stratosphere Casino and Tower, taken from a road on the edge of the Lake Meade National Recreation Area.

Here's a view of Chicago at night, in black and white. Note the Trump Tower, on the right, just beginning to be built. We could call it the Trump Stump.

In Search of a Comet

I spent a very cold couple of hours out in the countryside one evening last week, hoping to get a picture of the much-hyped Pan-STARRS comet.  It turned to be less than I had been led to believe--so much less that I was convinced while out photographing the sky that it wasn't there at all.

Only when I got home, and could look at my photos on a 27 inch monitor, did I finally realize it was there. In the photo above, the comet is the point of light above and slightly to the right of the red-lit radio broadcast antenna on the horizon (to see it, you may need to click on the picture and view a larger version). I have to admit I was underwhelmed, but I do like the resulting photo.

Market Day in Provence

In the summer, villages in the south of France have a weekly market day, sort of like an American farmer's market. On that day, a street or square is closed off from vehicle traffic, and roving vendors set up temporary stands offering the the various delicacies of the region. These pictures are from the market day at La Croix Valmer, on the Mediterranean coast, east of St. Tropez. Above is a stall offering olives, mostly from local trees.

Below is a vendor with all the garlic you could possibly want.

Finally, here is a vendor offering Paella as fast food--something that would be very hard to find at an American farmer's market.

Photo of the Day

I've been having fun this weekend playing with a mirror effect in Photoshop. Here is a view of the Chicago skyline, rendered as a mirror image. I think it's an interesting effect.

Tunnel Mountain

We'll finish off Canada week here at the ol' blog with a sunrise view of Tunnel Mountain in Banff National Park. When I set out that morning from the town of Banff, which sits at the base of Tunnel Mountain, the fog was thick as pea soup, and I felt sure that there would be no pictures to be had. I drove up a nearby mountain anyway, and was rewarded with this view of the fog as it began to burn off the mountain.

Photo of the Day

Since I seem to be posting about Canada this week, here is a view I like of some modern buildings in Toronto. Rendered in black and white.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls used to be the ultimate honeymoon destination. It's something that I think has fallen by the wayside in recent years. The Canadian side of the falls is a tacky blend of casinos, wax museums, and various ersatz romantic hotels, but the waterfront along the Niagara River is nice and well-maintained. Here is an evening view of the falls from the Canadian side, taken way back in 1981.
