April Tranquility

With the long awaited coming of April, I thought I'd share an April shot from a few years back. This is the Atlantic Ocean at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in April of 2011. The sun was about to rise on a beautiful day. Tranquility reigned.

Spring is Sprung

Spring is finally coming to East Central Illinois, after the worst winter we've had in the almost 15 years I've lived here. This view of High Cross Road road north of Urbana doesn't quite look like this yet, but it's coming. I can't wait.

Ditch Water

This is a moody picture of a drainage canal in East-Central Illinois, just south of Ludlow. I like the lines created by the walls of the canal, and foreboding nature of the clouds. This is from a January when we weren't snowed in all month, unlike this year.

Blast from the Past

This is an old barn and grain bin, apparently still in use, on a farm in far eastern Illinois, northwest of Oakwood. It's a beautiful old building, but it's hard to imagine it can last much longer. Buildings like this still exist on farms across Illinois, but they are fast disappearing, being replaced with generic pole buildings like the one in the background here. It has to happen, agriculture is a business after all, but it's a real shame to see some of these beautiful old buildings go.

Mountain Morning

This is the entrance to Big Thompson Canyon, which leads from Loveland, Colorado, up into the Rockies to Estes Park. The Big Thompson river is on the right. The road is US 34.

Chesapeake Bay

I love a cloudy day when the clouds are interesting. This is a view of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and the bridge and tunnel across the bay. The clouds are especially striking when rendered in black and white.

Early Morning North Dakota

Here's a view of the countryside in northwestern North Dakota. This is in the part of the state that holds the Bakken Formation, the vast repository of shale oil that is now being extracted by fracking. I took this photo in 2009, just before the start of the boom. This view might well be dominated by oil wells at this point.

Chicago, Looking Up

Here is a vertiginous view of some of the buildings in Chicago, right next to Millennium Park.

Cemetery in the Mountains

This is the cemetery at Creede in the southern Colorado, in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Creede was a big mining town in the late 1800s, and now is just a small town. My grandparents were raised here, and one of my great uncles is buried in this little old cemetery.

Estes Park in the Fall

This is a view from Estes Park of the mountains just south of it. I like the contrast with the vibrant gold of the trees.

Red, Green, and Blue

Spring in East-Central Illinois. Red grain sheds caught between the green foliage and a blue sky. This is just west of Tolono, Illinois.
