Lake Mead

A desert view today. I'm probably thinking of this because of the onset of summer heat here in East-Central Illinois. Of course, the desert is dry, while we've had plenty of rain and it's quite humid. Still, it's hot.

This is a view of Lake Mead, above Hoover Dam, east of Henderson, Nevada. A truly wonderful wilderness area, although hot.

Freedom Baptist Church

This is a view of the Freedom Baptist Church outside of Waveland, in West-Central Indiana. They have a beautiful little cemetery.

A Favorite Spot

This is one of my favorite spots to photograph out in the countryside of East-Central Illinois. I have written before about photographing such a favorite spot. For some reason the view of the trees along the road here, with the forest in the background, is very compelling for me, and I like to try to capture it in various seasons and under various conditions. In this case it's on a sunny Sunday in June.

A Tomb With a View

Here is the Indianapolis skyline as seen from Crown Hill Cemetery, northwest of downtown. I was actually standing at the tomb of James Whitcomb Riley who has by far the best seat in the house. Crown Hill is the fourth largest cemetery in the US, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. If you like cemeteries it's well worth a visit.

Sorry about the headline; I couldn't resist.

Great Place for a Show

This is the Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park in Chicago. In addition to being beautiful, the acoustics are very good for an open-air venue.

Big Boats

Massive yachts crowd the tiny harbor of St. Tropez, France, as the wealthy (and gauche) compete to show themselves off.

Sunset in SC

I thought I'd finish the week with a sunset, because who doesn't like sunsets? This is Charleston Harbor in Charleston, South Carolina. I love the clouds.

Sushi in Hakodate

Since I seem to be posting about quirky restaurants, I thought I'd post a picture of my favorite Sushi restaurant in Hakodate, on the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan. It's my favorite because it's the only one I've been to, but it was very good. The cute little VW van out front belonged to a customer.

Sadly, this restaurant is now gone, according to Google street view, but the 7-11 next door is still there, if that helps.

The Suzie Q

This is a cute little diner in Mason City, Iowa, called the Suzie Q Cafe. I shot this on film over 20 years ago. Ironically, the film scan was so good that I actually went into Photoshop with it to add a color cast and some effects to make look more film like. It sounds strange, but I like the result.

The Suzie Q is still there, so stop by if you're ever in Mason City.

Oceans: Fishing at Sunset

Another ocean sunset shot today, but this one is a bit more recent, and realistic. A young man and a bird, both patiently trying to catch fish at sunset. This was taken at Perdido Key, in far western Florida.

Oceans: Oversaturated Sunset

Here's an old shot from the 1990's when I was shooting film. This is the California coast north of Santa Cruz, along highway 1. I used an orange graduated filter to saturate the the sky. I think the effect is a bit much, actually, but at the time this was the only way to get the effect. Now I would take the straight shot into Photoshop and see what looked good.

Spring in ECIL

Spring was late and cold in East Central Illinois, and now it seems to be merging directly into hot, sticky summer. That's life in the Midwest. I finally got out to do some shooting over the Memorial Day weekend, and here is one of my photos from that. It's a classic scene around here: flat corn fields, big open sky, and an old grain elevator poised along the railroad tracks.
