Craters of the Moon National Monument is an amazing place in southern Utah. It consists of over 1,100 square miles of lava fields, some having flowed as recently as 2000 years ago. It is a stark landscape, but beautiful, with some plant life.

From my recent road trip to the west coast, this is a rustic view from eastern Oregon. It was shot along US 26 in the Malheur National Forest. The mountain in the background is called Vinegar Hill.

Coming back from the west coast on my recent trip I took US 50 across Nevada. They call it America's loneliest road, and the countryside is truly empty. This view is located east of Fallon in central Nevada.

US 26 crosses the broad Snake River plain of southern Idaho on its way to Craters of the Moon National Monument. This panorama shows the road just northwest of Balckfoot with Big Southern Butte on the left and Middle Butte on the right.

I am just back from a 5,800 mile driving trip to the west coast. I took lots of photos, and I will be posting select ones over the next month or so. The trip took me to Oregon and California, and across the states in between.
This photos was taken in Oregon on US 26 as it travels through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. That is Mount Hood on the horizon. Oregon is truly beautiful.

One of Illinois' biggest crops today is wind, or electricity generated from wind. This is a winter view of the California Ridge wind farm in East Central Illinois. The photo was shot in infrared and converted to black and white.

Here is another example of the beautiful June skies in Illinois. This photo was taken on the east side of Urbana.
This is a still from a short, 30 second time lapse of clouds moving across the sky. You can view that video here (sorry, no soundtrack):

June is a beautiful month in Illinois. Trees and plants are green, the sky is blue, and the clouds are puffy and white. It's a good time for photos of the countryside. The photo above is of one of the historic round barns on the University of Illinois campus in Urbana.

In the final photo in my series on photos of people in Japan, we see a Geisha performing the tea ceremony while being watched by some little girls. This photo was taken near the entrance to the main train station in Kyoto.
